Bridge to Island Gardens
This is a scene I painted in Plein Air for the Northbrook Plein Air Festival 2018. It won one of the awards at the event. It’s painted on Shizen Paper, one of the many surfaces I enjoy painting on.

Steve Puttrich started his studies at the American Academy of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. He received his degrees in architectural illustration, graphic design and fine art. Steve studied watercolor painting under the Academy’s Director, Irving Shapiro, and Oil Painting under Eugene Hall. After a 35-year career as an artist, designer, and Vice President of Creative Services and Innovation for an engineering and architectural firm. Steve enjoys teaching at The Palette and Chisel Academy of Arts in Chicago. Steve enjoys demonstrating his craft throughout various local venues and has won several awards in Plein Air Painting events as well as quick painting competitions.

A River Runs Through Cedarburg
This Plein Air painting was done during the Cedarburg Plein Air Festival 2017. It won best in show and is now in the permanent collection of the Cedarburg Art Museum. I was captivated by the contrast between the calm trees and churning water of the Cedarburg River.

Joshua Tree
This painting was done as a demo during one of my watercolor workshops at the Palette and Chisel Academy of Arts in Chicago. I was teaching the importance of building ones skill at negative painting. Part of this skill is getting comfortable with quickly flipping your brain from painting positive into the negative, even within the same brushstroke.

Become an American Watercolor Ambassador for a chance to be featured in an upcoming issue!
