“I was driving home after picking up dog food when I spotted this scene,” says Jim McVicker. “We live around a number of dairy farms that over the years I have loved to paint, particularly the cows. Seeing this gathering around the trough I couldn’t resist. I set up knowing it would be a fleeting scene but worked quickly and spontaneously, going for the paint without drawing anything out. I looked at the mass of cows as one shape while the few lying down and off to the side seemed to make the mass work.”
