Meet Jeremiah Patterson, this week’s top American Watercolor Weekly Ambassador!
This 1/2 sheet watercolor painting was made for exhibition in the 2020 FabrianoinAquarello show. It is a typical example of my watercolor still life work, which I create from direct observation.
Jeremiah Patterson teaches painting and drawing as Professor of Foundations at the Hartford Art School, University of Hartford in West Hartford CT. His paintings and drawings have been exhibited widely throughout the United States, including six one-person shows at the Sherry French Gallery in New York City, and three biennial survey exhibitions of Contemporary Representational Art; Representing Representation V & VI at the Arnot Art Museum in Elmira NY, and Contemporary American Realism at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art in Fort Wayne IN. Most recently, Jeremiah was selected for two important international group watercolor exhibitions in Fabriano, Italy; as one of 56 watercolor artists worldwide to exhibit in the prestigious Biennial International Prize “Marche d’Acqua” Fabriano Watercolor 2020/21 and also the 2020 FabrianoinAquarello Exhibition. His work has also been included in over 90 group exhibitions throughout the United States including shows at the Arkansas Art Center Museum, Albright-Knox Art Museum, the Flint Museum of Art, The Connecticut River Museum, the Wisteriahurst Museum, the Ridderhof-Martin Museum at Mary Washington College, Westfield State College, Anna-Maria College, Elms College, Collin County Community College in Texas, M.A. Doran Gallery in Tulsa OK, Klaudia Marr Gallery in Santa Fe, NM, Elm Tree Gallery in Franklin TN, and William Baczek Fine Arts in Northampton, MA.
This is an example of my figurative watercolor work, part of a series of paintings that look to themes from the past and view them in a contemporary light. My figure watercolor work is painted from both life, studies and photographic reference.
His work can be found in over 100 private and corporate collections including Art Overseas, Art & Interiors, Inc., Canson, Inc., Galman-Lepow Associates, Inc, and Norfolk Southern Co. Two major articles about his still life paintings have been published in the Spring 1997 & 2003 issues of WATERCOLOR Magazine, and a major article on his plein-air landscape watercolors was published in Plein Air Magazine.
This is a typical example of my plein-air watercolor paintings, done from direct observation on sight in Cortona, Italy, where I’ve travelled many many times. As I came around a corner to see this motorcycle covered with a tarp, perched against this ochre colored stucco wall next to the very worn door, I also noticed a family gathered at the door of the neighborhood church not far from where I was sitting and locals coming to greet them with their condolences. I discovered that the family was mourning the recent loss of their son who had been killed after being thrown from the motorcycle, and it is customary for them to go to the door of the church so their neighbors can visit them with their love and support. It became suddenly clear why it had been covered in such a way. While I was initially drawn to the textures, sunlight, and juxtaposition of the covered motorcycle next to the old door, as the sun came through the buildings and illuminated the scene, and as I could hear the locals greeting the family, the picture suddenly took on a very different meaning to me.
