Born in India, Jyotsna Umesh now lives in northern Virginia. “I’ve doodled since I was child, but three years ago I saw the mesmerizing watercolor paintings of Milind Mullick and something changed in me. I dedicated myself to learn this medium.

“Since then there is not a single day when I have not watched a tutorial, painted, or read watercolor book. Painting in this medium is like meditation to me. It answers all my questions, and I am at peace when I am surrounded by colors.

“Jay Cafe” (watercolor, 11 x 14 in.)

“A few years ago, I was at an outdoor cafe in Washington, D.C. when the light and shadows, dynamics of people in the cafe, and wonderful placement of various shapes inspired me to paint the scene. I changed the cafe name to honor my younger son Jay.”
