Let Loose the Waterworks

When the pandemic prevented them from meeting in person, the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association presented their 4th Annual “Waterworks” as an online virtual gallery exhibition and sale July 13 – 19, 2020. Dedicated to works created by LPAPA Members using transparent watercolors, this annual show honors Joe Hanks Van Cleave (1920-2003) who preferred painting with the medium and often exhibited as a member of the Laguna Beach Art Association (1957-1969) in their gallery (now the Laguna Art Museum), which hosted her big one-woman show in July 1962.

From over 145 entries, jurors Cindy Baron (Signature Member of LPAPA), Rosemary Swimm (LPAPA Executive Director), and Linda Stern (Board Member Historical Collection Council) selected 49 original paintings created by LPAPA Signature and Artist Members for the show. Jean Stern (Director Emeritus of Irvine Museum) was the judge for the “Best in Show-Best Plein Air” award.

In addition to the usual awards, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Honorable Mention, and the Peoples’ Choice award (voted on via a Facebook campaign), there was the special Best in Show-Best Plein Air Award. The winner of this award has been invited to participate in the 22nd Annual Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational October 3 – 11, 2020.
