Nestled in the heart of Pittsburgh, Frick Park offers a tapestry of natural beauty waiting to be discovered: winding trails framed by towering trees, sun-dappled clearings, hidden streams, and pockets of vibrant wildflowers that shift with the seasons. For the artists of the Pittsburgh Plein Air Collective, these dynamic landscapes became both subject and studio. Each bend in the path, each glint of sunlight on a leaf, offered a new challenge and a fresh opportunity to capture the park’s textures, colors, and moods in watercolor. It was this living, ever-changing environment — where light dances, shadows shift, and moments are fleeting — that inspired the Collective to return repeatedly, translating the park’s essence into expressive brushwork.
In Frick Park and Nature’s Palette, the artists share their unique views of the park in their inaugural exhibition. On view through the end of November 2025 at the Frick Environmental Center, Living Room & Art Gallery, the show presents a collection of (mostly) watercolor paintings that celebrate the park’s natural beauty, its seasonal transformations, and the quiet moments of joy found along its trails.

Founded in 2015, the Pittsburgh Plein Air Collective is a small, close-knit group of artists who gather weekly to paint outdoors, exploring scenic locations across the region. While their individual styles vary, the group thrives on shared inspiration, mutual support, and the freedom to experiment with new techniques. During winter or inclement weather, members continue creating indoors—in coffee shops, the Environmental Center, or each other’s homes — so the act of painting never pauses.
This year, the collective returned to Frick Park for multiple painting sessions, letting the park’s features guide their process. Sun-dappled trails, glistening streams, vibrant foliage, and secluded clearings became the focus of careful observation and expressive brushwork. Each watercolor is a record of the artists’ engagement with the landscape, capturing fleeting light, textures, and colors that can only be fully experienced in person.

The exhibition invites viewers to experience Frick Park in a new way, seeing the familiar through the lens of the artist’s hand. Whether it’s the shimmer of sunlight on autumn leaves, the delicate interplay of winter shadows, or the first blooms of spring, each painting reflects the artist’s personal connection to the park and the joy of working en plein air.
Frick Park and Nature’s Palette is more than a showcase of technique — it’s a celebration of the creative process, discovery, and community that plein air painting fosters. For artists and park enthusiasts alike, the exhibition is an invitation to explore, observe, and to see Frick Park through fresh eyes.
